PAST
The history of Travelers Rest is an interesting one. Information concerning the history of our church comes from some members of Travelers Rest, the late Mrs. Willie Woodard-Veasley (oldest and long time member), the late Mr. Jesse J. Shamblee, the late Mr. Leonard Moore, the late Mrs. Maudie Schuler-Estes, the late Mrs. Rosie Moore, and Mr. Clinton Thompson, who were members for a long time, and who knew members of the formative years of the church; the information members had at hand and written records of our secretary.
Travelers Rest was founded and organized by a number of persons who were former members of the Jackson Street First Baptist Church. Travelers Rest Missionary Baptist Church was first organized in a wood frame house across the road in front of Mr. Andrew Whitfield.
The first pastor, the Reverend T.H. Allen, and members moved the house in front of Mr. Will and Mrs. Mary Lillie Allen's house where Mrs. Alma Montgomery and her family once lived. After so long a time, Travelers Rest members decided to buy the plot of land. The land was purchased from Mr. Joe Burnside.
Travelers Rest had the frame building torn down and held church service on this spot under a Brush Harbor until a frame church was built
In 1962, the present site under the pastor-ship of the late Reverend F.Y. Clark was built. Reverend Clark served from 1960 until 1990. Some of the lumber from the old church was used in constructing the present building. Among the work crew: Deacon Percy Harmon, Mr. Will Allen, Mr. Willie A. Shamblee and Mr. Willie C. Evans. The church was completed in 1963. In 1980 Reverend F.Y. Clark, his church officers and members saw the need to expand the church by adding a Fellowship Hall.
The Reverend Jesse Jackson served as Travelers Rest pastor from 1991-April 1993.
PRESENT
Currently, the Travelers Rest M.B. Church is under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Cleotis Woods. Under Rev. Dr. Cleotis Woods the church added the multipurpose building.
